DUKE & DUCHESS

Get to Know the Artist
My name is Anna Taylor, born and raised in Indonesia, moved to Russia, went to school in Germany, and finally settled here in Oklahoma with my college sweetheart. I had the privilege of growing up in other cultures, always traveling and experiencing a variety of environments and ecosystems. The beauty of those worlds planted a love for exploring and a curiosity for creating with natural elements and raw materials.
How would you describe your art?
I'm a nature inspired artist focusing on the use of raw and repurposed materials. My style is abstract, sometimes in the form of mosaics, and focusing on texture and movement. I source my slate from old pool tables (vintage and antique). I love being able to reuse materials that have history and a story to go with them.
How did it begin?
It's hard to explain the fascination I have with slate. I guess you could say that it all began when we found a broken antique pool table left in the basement of our 1920's dutch colonial, a favorite home that we renovated years back. We have carried that slate from home to home, knowing that we would use it for something special. The inspiration came and I fell in love with this art medium. I love the way it breaks apart, showcasing the beautiful layers; some delicate, some strong, some sharp, some smooth. It's relatable on a personal level. It's taking something chaotic and unpredictable and turning it into something whole and orderly. This art form is intricate and time consuming. It can't be rushed. When I work on these pieces, time plays no part and my mind is set free of life's distractions. It's such a gift to me during this season of life. I sincerely hope that this art also inspires you in a personal way.
